3 Tips for Maintaining your Mental Health at a Difficult Job

This evening, in the middle of my workout, I walked out of the garage and straight into the living room. I flopped on the couch, laid my head on my boyfriends lap, and cried my eyes out. Frustrated with myself for letting the stresses of work affect my emotional state. I'm about 100% certain I am not the only one to break down because of the stresses of work.

Like most people doing what they love, I adore my job, my residents, their families, and my employees. However, I most definitely do not love those I work with in administration. Some days they make things unbearable. I'm just going to be honest here; they're assholes. Unfortunately though we all have to deal with people that are less desirable. That's why it is so important to learn ways to deal with them. It is never okay to let coworkers push you out of a position you love.

Here are a few tips I use (and you can use too) in order to combat these awful people and maintain sanity and mental clarity.

1. Analyze why you are feeling a certain way. Ask yourself, am I focused only on being recognized for my work? Do I really need the validation of my coworkers to feel valuable?

2. Adjust your values and goals appropriately to restructure your focus. You should let go of specific daily goals (i.e. complete programming schedule, complete assessments) and set general long-term goals (i.e. be a supportive manager, improve teamwork skills, be a positive person). My  main problem is I value myself as a hardworking person that does a great job at whatever I do. Therefore, if my team keeps nagging me I must not be a hard worker right? Faulty thinking. Change it. If I go into work, help others, learn something new, and complete tasks then I can feel content that I am continually working towards "hardworking". The opinions of others mean nothing; really all they do if feed or starve your ego. 

3. Continue to do the things that improve your mood and make you feel happy. For me it's spending time with my boyfriend and dogs, attending jiu jitsu, crossfit, reading/writing, binge watching Netflix shows, shopping. I can't stress how important it is to never let go of the things that bring you joy and happiness. 

It is always beneficial to take a step back, identify the emotions you are experiencing and why you are experiencing them, identify your values and how you are measuring them, and set a plan in stone for solving your problems/issues, and getting into a better emotional/mental state.
