How to Stop Over-Thinking & Take Charge of Your Life
Over-thinking. We all do it, a lot of the time. Some more than others.
Believe me when I say, you are not alone. You can catch me deciding which restaurant to eat at for two hours or walking around the store for an hour trying to decide whether I really need that $15 scented candle. We’ve all been there.
Chances are, if you over-think things like that, you’re probably over-thinking more serious things like your career, life decisions, mistakes, etc. Constantly questioning your life, thinking of the if’s, and worrying about the when’s-then’s, can cause anxiety, difficulty sleeping and may even hinder you from enjoying your life to the fullest.
If you’re constantly questioning your decisions, worrying about the “what-if’s” or “when-then’s”, or simply feel as though you can’t reach your goals, you won’t reach your goals.
It’s as simple as that.
I know when I am stuck in this never-ending loop of self-doubt and over-thinking behavior I rarely get anything purposeful done. I become so anxious I will keep myself from making any decisions for fear of doing the wrong things or wasting time. It’s completely irrational and not in any way beneficial for my mental health. I’ve been there and because I know I’m not alone in this, I want to share with you how to get a handle on your life and take charge.
You have one life to live, why would you not want to take charge of your life and live the best life possible?
So how can we enjoy the present moment?
Live in the Moment
Accept yourself and where you are in your life.
You are exactly where you are meant to be in this very moment.
Everything before now has brought you to this moment. Everything after will happen because of this very moment.
Cherish it. Remind yourself you’ll never get to relive this moment again.
Trust in the process of your life, the good and the bad.
I am a firm believer in the saying, “everything happens for a reason.” Absolutely cliche I know but it’s a real thing!
Take Charge & Start Now
Forget the “What-If’s”, But’s”, and “When’s-Then’s”.
Make decisions unapologetically. Once a decision is made, there is not point in worrying what may happen. What is going to happen will happen despite over-thinking things.
Stop using “when-then” statements. They may sound something like this, “When I’m able to buy a treadmill, then I’ll start working out”. “When I have my master’s in social work, then I’ll enjoy my life and career” (this was actually one of mine). These are excuses. When-then statement’s sort of negate your current experience. Enjoy NOW. Start NOW. You only have this moment once, experience and enjoy it, don’t ignore it by looking forward to something else.
Stop using “but’s”. Another excuse. If you say you’re going to do something, do it.
Remember, every second is a new second. You will not experience this again :).
Believe in Yourself
You are full of potential and more powerful than you may realize.
Within you is all of the strength you’ll ever need to harness your full potential.
You can achieve anything and everything you want to achieve in this life if you have the drive and confidence to do so.
I Encourage You…
I encourage you to live in the moment, enjoy your life, stop wasting your precious time worrying about whether you made the right decision about something or worrying about the what-if’s.
Take a moment to think about what you want in life and what you want to accomplish. Develop a plan and do it.
Want to make changes? Make them. Want to enjoy your life more? Figure out what you enjoy and do it. Don’t waste another second!
I hope you found this motivating and encouraging! Have a wonderful day!
