Guide to Making Every Day a Mental Health Day

Guide to Making Every Day a Mental Health Day

Mental health is the most vital element to our wellness. Without a healthy sense of mental health, the foundation for a well-balanced fulfilling life is almost impossible. Think of mental health as the foundation of your home. Without the foundation, your home would fall down. It’s quite the same for us. If we’re not taking care of ourselves mentally, all the other aspects of our wellness are eventually going to topple over on us.

Let’s face it, life can be overwhelming even when we’re at our peak performance, much less when we’re not. So, why would we not be focusing on making DAILY mental health a priority?

I want to note however, if you are experiencing depression please please please reach out to a licensed professional in your area. Therapy can be life changing.

Making Every Day a Mental Health Day

What Exactly is Mental Health?

Mental health is defined by the World Heath Organization as "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community” (WHO, 2014).

Mental health is a multifaceted human experience. There are all sorts of areas in our life we must nourish in order to feel a sense of clarity, purpose, and fulfillment. Lucky though, there are tons of ways we can focus on improving and maintaining our mental health. In order to do so however, we’re going to also have to focus on our emotional, physical, and spiritual health as well.

How Can I Make Mental Health a Daily Priority?

Alright, let’s cut to the chase! I’m going to tell you exactly how you can care for your health and well-being every single day. You do not have to incorporate every single idea into your daily or weekly routine but picking a few things here and there that are relatable to you is the perfect way to go. I would suggest picking two from each category:

Mental Health

Wake up early

Write a to-do list for each day

Say your daily affirmations to yourself (always a good boost!)

Be patient with yourself

Be as flexible as possible

Remember it’s healthy to say no sometimes

Give yourself short breaks throughout the day

Write down your accomplishments for each day/week

Learn some relaxation techniques

Forgive yourself when you mess up

Ask for help

Forgive yourself if you mess up. We all do!

Anticipate joy

Cut back on anything in excess (sugar, alcohol, drugs, sleep, etc.)

Emotional Health

Practice gratitude daily

Smile and laugh as much as possible

Do something fun

Cry if you need to! (I love a healthy cry)

Spend time with friends and family

Physical Health

Stretch as soon as you wake up

Go for a walk on your lunch break

Drink water!

Count your macros

Get enough sleep

Practice yoga

Practice mindfulness

Spend some time alone

Volunteer/contribute time to helping others

Spend time in nature

Why Am I Doing this?

Over the course of a single day, each and every one of us are juggling several roles and responsibilities, each taking a little piece of us. Despite this, we expect to be perfect in carrying out everything expected of us. Often when that happens, our mental health takes a hit. It gets pushed to the back burner. After all, you’re already doing so much.

Trust me, I completely understand. What most people don’t know though is we can implement practices here and there that can make a tremendous difference for us. There is NO reason in the world not to focus on your mental health daily.

Focus on being mentally healthy and strong and see how your life changes.
